Plan tillage around the soil and the task

Define the intended soil operation before choosing width or estimating passes.

Define the outcome first

Begin with a question about the field: what condition must change before the next operation can happen? Record your intended depth, residue situation and the following crop operation. “Work the field” is too vague to compare equipment options or a contractor’s quotation.

A disc harrow manual has its own tractor, attachment and adjustment requirements. Use those for the selected machine. Do not turn a general catalogue horsepower range into approval for a particular width in your soil.

Estimate each pass separately

Create one line for each planned operation: area, effective width, working speed and efficiency. Calculate the hours independently, then add them. A second pass over the same area is a second workload; it should not disappear inside a single acreage entry.

Keep setup, travel between fields and implement changes as explicit allowances when your field-efficiency assumption does not include them. This also makes it easier to compare owning a machine with hiring the same work.

Keep capacity and power separate

The field-capacity tool answers how long a stated width and speed would take. It does not prove the tractor can maintain that speed or pull that implement at the chosen depth. Ask the supplier what test or application guidance supports the proposed combination.

For a planning sensitivity check, calculate the same area at the speed you hope to achieve and at a slower speed. Label both as scenarios. Avoid presenting the faster case as a guaranteed completion time.

Questions for a quotation

Ask whether the quotation covers all passes, moves between parcels, machine changes and the agreed result. Note how the operator will decide that conditions are unsuitable to proceed. Keep photographs and the written scope with your estimate so a change in the job can be distinguished from a change in machine performance.

Put your assumptions to work

Use your own inputs and keep the results with your planning sheet.
