How the calculation works

US: Draft (lbs) = width (ft) × depth (in) × unitDraft (lbs/ft/in) Drawbar HP = Draft × speed (mph) ÷ 375 Required Engine HP = Drawbar HP ÷ (Tractive Efficiency % ÷ 100) Recommended Tractor (+15% reserve) = Required Engine HP × 1.15 Metric: Draft (kN) = width (m) × depth (cm) × unitDraft (N/m/cm) ÷ 1000 Drawbar kW = Draft (kN) × speed (km/h) ÷ 3.6

ASAE D497.7 provides baseline soil resistance benchmarks across implement categories. Typical unit draft ranges from 35–50 lbs/ft/in (200–290 N/m/cm) for light secondary tillage (disks, field cultivators) up to 70–85 lbs/ft/in (400–490 N/m/cm) for chisel plowing in loam, and >100 lbs/ft/in (570 N/m/cm) for deep ripping in heavy clay. Tractive efficiency accounts for wheel slip and soil shear (firm soil: 72–78%, tilled loam: 65–70%, soft sand: 50–55%).

Actual soil draft varies with soil moisture, compaction, ground slope, and share sharpness. Use this estimate to establish realistic implement sizing rather than guaranteed field performance. Always check the tractor operator manual for continuous drawbar load ratings.
