How the calculation works

Target operating weight = rated power × weight-to-power ratio Ballast needed = target weight - current weight Front load = target weight × front share% Rear load = target weight × (100% - front share%)

ASABE EP496 guidelines recommend 120–145 lbs/hp (73–88 kg/kW) for standard draft work (4.5–5.5 mph / 7–9 km/h), reducing to ~110 lbs/hp (67 kg/kW) for higher speeds (>6 mph / 10 km/h). Typical static front axle targets are 25–30% for 2WD, 40–45% for MFWD, and 50–55% for 4WD tractors under towed draft.

Never exceed manufacturer maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) ratings, individual axle limits, or tire load and pressure capacities specified in the tractor operator manual. Ballasting recommendations are guidance for tractive efficiency, not structural approvals.
